The Delhi BJP may not to be directly invoking religion while connecting with supporters but its women’s wing is on a drive to tap new members very close to God’s own abode.

The Mahila Morcha of the saffron party is targeting prayer meetings or “bhajan mandlis” at neighbourhood temples to tap new women members and potential supporters for the next Assembly election.

The enrolment drive has tapped nearly one lakh new members and the target is  touch two lakh in the coming two months.

Kamaljeet Sehrawat , the head of the BJP’s Mahila Morcha, said: “Four temples in each ward or 16 in an Assembly constituency will be identified for meeting women in the evening and enrolling them as members.”

“We are not seeking votes as the elections have not even been announced,” she clarified.

The party has deputed one worker as incharge of four temples in each ward. The worker will be responsible for identifying the day on which the weekly bhajans are held in the temple and inform teams of the Mahila Morcha to come and interact with the women devotees.

“All that we are asking the people to join the BJP is to give a missed call on our party’s toll free number,” said Sehrawat.

Apart from temples, the saffron party is also making a list of two weekly markets in each ward where the Mahila Morcha teams could enrol new members.

A BJP leader said: “The Mahila Morcha is also planning a scooter rally around December 27 and a major sanitation campaign in slums and areas of polling booths where the party is week.”

The response to the membership drive is good, said a Mahila Morcha leader from Saket.

“The moment we mention that we are from the BJP and want to enrol them as members, the people themselves commit that they will vote for our party in the next election,” she said.

The public response to the membership drive is good in colonies like Vasant Kunj, Rohini and Dwarka. Sehrawat said the charisma of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is working in favour of the party.

“Our task of connecting with new members does become easy if someone is an admirer of Modi and his good governance,” she said.
