HC gets 2.15L pages of documents in Jaya DA case

The High Court of Karnataka on Monday received 2.15 lakh pages of book papers and records pertaining to the disproportionate assets case against former chief minister of Tamil Nadu, J Jayalalitha.

The book papers reached the High Court premises in 48 green bags and were taken to the office of the Deputy Registrar (Records) around 12:30 pm. As many as 12 advocates representing Jayalalitha accompanied the consignment.

The Deputy Registrar (Records) of the Karnataka High Court issued the No Objection Certificate (NOC) to the advocates as that was one of the conditions on which the Supreme Court had granted conditional bail to Jayalalitha, who was convicted and sentenced by a special court of the CBI in Bengaluru. The apex court had granted conditional bail to Jayalalitha on October 17, 2014, and directed her to submit all the records—in a book format—pertaining to the disproportionate assets case from the lower court in Chennai and the Madras High Court to the High Court of Karnataka before December 18, 2014.

The advocate appearing for Jayalalitha has to submit the NOC to the Supreme Court before December 18, 2014, after which the apex court would give further directions on the deadlines to dispose of the pending criminal appeals before the High Court of Karnataka.

Jayalalitha was sentenced to four-year simple imprisonment and fined Rs 100 crore by the CBI Special Court on September 27, 2014. Her co-accused, Sasikala Natarajan, V Sudhakaran and J Elavarasi were sentenced to four years’ imprisonment with a fine of Rs 10 crore each.

Jayalalitha and the co-accused had filed criminal appeals before the High Court seeking that the CBI Special Court order be set aside.
