when death came calling in sporting ring

2014: Kevin Ward Jr (USA, 20): The young driver suffered a fatal accident while racing in a sprint car event at Canandaigua Motorsports Park earlier in the year.

After veteran Tony Stewart had collided with him on the previous lap, Ward Jr was walking on the track when the former struck him. 

Medical services at the site responded to the distress call immediately but they weren’t able to save his life and he was pronounced dead at a local hospital the same night.
2011: Marco Simoncelli (Italy, 24): The Moto GP rider suffered fatal injuries while racing for the Honda Gresini Team at the Malaysian GP.

As his bike lost traction before suddenly regaining it which forced the bike veer across the track, he was hit by American Colin Edwards and compatriot Valentino Rossi.
While the American suffered a dislocated shoulder, Simoncelli had suffered severe injuries to the head, neck and chest and passed away soon after.

2007: Antonio Puerta (Spain, 22): After suffering multiple cardiac incidents while playing for Sevilla against Getafe during a La Liga encounter, it looked like the full back had recovered and was substituted. But he again collapsed in the dressing room and died three days later dur to a multiple organ failure.

2004: Cristiano Junior (Brazil, 25): While playing in a Federation Cup match for Dempo against Mohun Bagan, the striker, while scoring a goal, had an accidental collision with goalkeeper Subrata Pal.

After collapsing on the field of play, attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. He had died of a heat stroke and was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital in Bangalore.  

2004: Miklos Feher (Hungary, 24): While playing for Benfica against Vitoria de Guimaraes in the Portugal’s Primeira Liga, the striker, who had just come on a as a substitute, suffered from cardiac arrhythmia. On-field medics did give him CPR but his death was confirmed around midnight on the same day. 

2003: Marc-Vivien Foe (Cameroon, 28): Playing in the semifinal of their match against Colombia in the Confederations Cup in Lyon, France, the midfielder collapsed in the centre circle. The Stadium’s medical team attempted to revive him but he soon succumbed.

2001: Dale Earnhardt Sr (USA, 49): The NASCAR Hall Of Famer was involved in an accident during the final lap at the 2001 Daytona 500. While he was taken to a medical centre, the autopsy concluded that he had died instantly of blunt force trauma to the head.
But he again collapsed in the dressing room following another cardiac incident. He passed away three days later following a multiple organ failure.  

1994: Ayrton Senna (Brazil, 34): The three-time Formula One World Champion was involved in a horrific accident during the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola.
While the initial treatment was given trackside, he was airlifted to a hospital in Bologna where he was declared dead hours later.
Another driver, Roland Ratzenberger, a rookie, had died during qualifying a day earlier.
