JOIN USPolice Commissioner M A Saleem on Saturday appealed to the police to work better to be distinct among 35 police units in the State.
Addressing the various wings of City Police during the special parade organised on the completion of 25 years of the police commissionerate, at City Armed Reserve (CAR) grounds here, Saleem advised his colleagues to change their behaviour by conducting themselves with ease and dignity, towards making the department a people-friendly set up.
Saleem said, the general perception among people towards the Police Department had remained the same, with most of them reluctant to approach the sentinels during the hours of crisis. Such a mindset among people called for a change in the style of functioning of the men in khaki, who have treat the complainants with respect.
“We should not compromise on bringing the perpetrators to books, and ensure peace and orderliness in society,” he said.
Expressing satisfaction over the rate of detection in crime cases and traffic management, Saleem was happy to note that the recent 404th Dasara festival was celebrated without any untoward incidents being recorded. While the numbers of habitual offenders had come down, 50 per cent of the theft cases reported in the year had been cracked, and 97 per cent of the stolen properties had been recovered. However, daylight thefts had risen, and there was a need to keep a tab on inter-district offenders.
Funds allocated
Saleem said the State government had earmarked Rs 113 crore for improving the basic amenities under the purview of Police Commissionerate. The existing CCB unit had been upgraded and Mysore Traffic Improvement Project (M-TRAC) was under implementation, while there had been enormous reforms in traffic system. The rate of fatal mishaps had come down this year, with 87 deaths reported against 141 in the previous year.
Parade
In all, 1,125 police personnel took out a colourful parade at the CAR police grounds. It included 16 troops of Law and Order wing, five of CAR, and one each of Women’s, Airport and Wireless Units. Mounted police and sniffer dogs also took part in the parade to the applause of the gathering.
