Students, differently-abled, farmers register their protest

Demanding Mysore City Corporation (MCC) to issue No Objection Certificates (NoC) or licences for petty shops operated by differently abled persons, members of Vikalachethanara Abhyudaya Vedike, launched an indefinite protest, here on Monday.

Department for the Empowerment of Differently Abled and Senior Citizens has made arrangements for people with disabilities to open small petty shops, to encourage self-employment among them. However, despite repeated attempts, MCC authorities had not issued either NoCs or licences for the petty shops, they alleged.

Instead, MCC officials had issued licences to influential persons to open milk centres near parks. The protest will continue in front of MCC, until the demands of the organisation are met, said Sridhar Deekshith, president of the Vedike.

KRRS protest

Criticising the delay by T Narsipur Tahsildar in registering a khatha, members of T Narsipur unit of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS), staged a protest in front of the DC office.

Members of KRRS and a few residents of the village who participated in the protest, alleged that political influence by vested interests in the taluk had delayed the process of registration. Following a dispute between Mahadevamma and Chinnamma, both residents of Mugur village in the taluk, the High Court had ruled in favour of Mahadevamma, in connection to the case regarding Survey No 559/3. However, thasildar was exercising unwarranted delay in registering the khatha, the protestors alleged. 

Reduce fares

Members of JD(S) student unit staged a protest, demanding the State government to reduce bus fares, following the decrease in petrol and diesel prices.

“The Centre has reduced the price of petrol and diesel during the past month. However, there has been no reduction in bus fares,” the protesters said. They demanded that the fares be relaxed by 10 to 15 per cent in the State.

ABVP protest

Alleging that the State government had failed to curb the acts of sexual violence against women, members of Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad staged a protest.

Considering the number of cases of sexual violence against women and children, it was clear that law and order has failed in the State. Moreover, the State government was ignoring such cases by not initiating stern measures, the protesters said.

Hostel demanded

Demanding a separate hostel for LLB students and urging the district administration to continue the service of S Revanna as the warden of PUC, LLB Hostel in the city, inmates of the hostel staged a protest in front of the DC office.

Hostel of Government Bifurcated College in Bogadi has been merged with PUC hostel in the city, increasing the number of inmates at PUC, LLB Hostel.

Therefore, a separate LLB Hostel should be set up, the protesters demanded.

Support for handloom

Extending support to the demonstration by Akhila Bharatha Kai-Magga Sangatanegala Okkoota in Gadag, several persons staged a sit-in, in front of Gandhi Bhavan, University of Mysore premises, here on Monday.

Theatre personalities, writers and activists who participated in the sit-in, demanded the State to respond to the demonstration at Gadag.

Rangayana Director, H Janardhan said that State government should extend support to save the handloom industry, which employed thousands of perons across the State. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah should respond to the demands of the protesters, he added.
