Panel relaxes some guidelines for schools

Last Updated 25 October 2014, 19:19 IST

The committee set up to look into the implementation of the nine-point safety guidelines in schools issued by the police recently has reportedly relaxed some of the guidelines. The last date for schools to comply with the guidelines is October 31.

While private school managements had agreed to implement most of the guidelines, they had raised concerns over certain parts of point one in the guidelines relating to the installation of CCTV cameras and GPS in school buses and point nine dealing with appointing security personnel.

They had contended that these guidelines should not be uniform for everyone as it would lead to huge costs.

“We have suggested that the GPS system in buses need not be mandatory. Another suggestion is that floor vigilance officers need not necessarily be from outside agencies,” said Mohammed Mohsin, Department of Public Instruction.

Committee

The committee, comprising education department and police officials as well as of representatives of private school managements, met recently. The private school representatives aired their grievances at the meeting.

Philomena Lobo, director, Secondary Education and chairperson of the committee, said: “The committee has submitted recommendations to the police department. We realise that certain points are difficult to comply with and we have suggested some amount of relaxation,” she said.

Eshwar Prasad, Deputy Commissioner of Police (VIP security) and nodal officer, said that the process of collecting and compiling information on security measures from different schools is on.
