Woman stabbed to death after quarrel

Police detain her friend for questioning
Last Updated 18 October 2014, 03:12 IST

A 27-year-old woman from Mizoram who worked for a Gurgaon-based BPO died under mysterious circumstances at her rented accommodation in south Delhi’s Munirka late on Thursday. Police have ruled out any racial angle in the crime.

The woman’s death was reported to police from Safdarjung Hospital where she was taken to by her close friend Virendra Singh, a native of Haldwani in Uttarakhand.

He has been held by police for questioning along with some more persons who had attended a party at the woman’s flat earlier in the night. A case of murder has been registered and investigations are on, said police.

Sources in police revealed that Virendra, an engineering graduate preparing for civil services examination, has been claiming that the victim, Juliet Zonunmawi, inflicted injuries to herself under the influence of alcohol.

Neighbours heard quarrel

Neighbours told police that they heard Juliet and Virendra quarreling loudly after the guests who attended the party had left. Soon, they had Virendra knocking at one of their doors in an inebriated state claiming that Juliet had ‘harmed herself’.

Even as the neighbours tried to contact the flat owner, Virendra had taken Juliet to Safdarjung Hospital. When a police team reached the flat, they found bloodstained footwear marks in the house and on the stairs.

Sources said police are not buying Virendra’s version and suspect that he was misleading the investigation. They feel it was a domestic quarrel between Virendra and Juliet that went wrong.Bloodstained knife

A bloodstained knife has been recovered from the house. Juliet sustained head injuries, probably inflicted with a heavy object and stab wounds in the abdomen and thigh.

“A Central Forensic Science Laboratory team has collected the evidence from the spot and her body has been preserved at the mortuary. After her family members reach Delhi, a post-mortem will be conducted. A medical team has also been constituted to conduct the autopsy,” police said.

Hailing from Aizwal in Mizoram, Juliet had been living in Delhi for the last five years.

She had shifted to this one-room flat only a few months ago and Virendra was a frequent visitor.
