Hearing a criminal appeal by 20 persons who were sentenced to life imprisonment in 2010 by the special court set up under the SC/ST (Prevention of Attrocities) Act 1989, at Mysore, a division bench comprising Justices N Ananda and Pradeep D Waingankar upheld the sentencing of 13 persons while acquitting seven. Three persons Basappa,  Chandrashekar alias Shekar and Mahesh died during the trial.

The persons acquitted are: Revanna, Basavanna, Rajashekara, Shivanandaswamy, Krupashankar,  Shivarudra and Revanna.

The court said they shall be released immediately if they were not required to be in custody in connection with other cases.

On March 25, 1993, an armed mob hacked to death Narayanswamy, Madhukar and Nataraj at Badanavalu in Nanjangud taluk.

The incident took place after the dalits sought permission to conduct an animal sacrifice after gaining entry into Siddeshwara temple. The dalits were denied an entry into the temple by the upper caste Hindus and the dalits gained entry with the help of police.
