Nikin show props up Karnataka

Nikin Jose’s well-crafted hundred guided Karnataka to a position of strength against Goa on the opening day of the three-day under-16 South Zone cricket tournament for the Vijay Merchant Trophy at the SDNRW ground, here on Wednesday. 

Electing to bat, Karnataka made a strong beginning to their innings as Jose (146, 352m, 272b, 18x4) and Dev Padikkal (73, 204m, 153b, 7x4) shared a first-wicket stand of 159 runs in 53.1 overs. Their alliance propelled Karnataka to an end of the day score of 304/4 in 90 overs. 

Padikkal fell to offie Hitesh Talwar but Jose added 98 runs for the third wicket with Sujay Sateri (41, 108m, 76b, 6x4) before left-arm seamer Shanu Vantamuri dismissed Sateri. The hosts lost Jose in the 88th over of the day to Vantamuri but by then they had done enough to win the day’s honours.

Tamil Nadu: 311/6 in 90 overs (D Prashant Prabhu 85 n.o., S Kishan Kumar 74, D Vinesh Kumar 49, P Ranjan Paul 42; Aravind Rajesh 2-76, Afrad Reshab 2-63, Akhil Scaria 2-62) vs Kerala. 

At Mandya: Andhra: 299/4 in 93 overs (Maheep Kumar 183, Sandeep 62, Vamsi Krishna 44; Sohail Shaikh 4-27) vs Hyderabad.
