Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) and the State government is set to start mega milk dairies in City. With demand for milk and milk products increasing, at a recent meeting with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, KMF office bearers have appealed to the State for providing infrastructure to increase its processing units.

Accordingly, Siddaramaiah has assured KMF of government backing in this venture. With an estimated increase to 35 lakh litre of milk every day within City limits in the next five years, from present 17 lakh litre every day, KMF is expected to set up at least two more within Bangalore.

With already functioning mega dairy in Yelahanka, KMF is expected to open one in Devanahalli and either in Bidadi or Kengeri. It is estimated that every mega dairy will cost Rs 90 to Rs 100 crore for setting up the processing unit. According to KMF officials, every mega dairy will require no less than 25 acres of land.

Land banks

On instructions of Siddaramaiah, the government is already looking out for the possible land banks in and around the region. An initial round of talks were held between Development Commissioner Lata Krishna Rau and District Revenue officials. Similar such efforts of setting up mega dairies in Tumkur, Kolar and Mandya have also been taken up by the district milk federations.
