A 50-year-old businessman was stabbed to death outside his house in central Delhi’s Karol Bagh by a former neighbour over personal enmity on Monday.

The accused was arrested near Liberty Cinema within hours of the attack, police said. The victim, identified as Ishwar Lal, lived with his family in Raigarpura and owned an embroidery factory in the area.

Police said he was attacked around 7 am and was declared brought dead at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital with multiple stab wounds. Ishwar received a call from his driver informing that the glasses of his car parked near the house was found broken.

Within minutes, Ishwar reached the spot and was assessing the damage when he was attacked from behind by 34-year-old Mahesh, a resident of Inderpuri.

“Ishwar was stabbed twice in his back after he tried to run into a temple to save himself. But Mahesh pounced on him and stabbed him six times leaving him in a pool of blood. Ishwar managed to crawl out of the temple, but collapsed near his house,” said Alok Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police (Central). Mahesh then fled in his Santro.

Hearing the commotion, Ishwar’s family came to his help and took him to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

His family members informed police who found that CCTV cameras in the area had captured the attack. “On the basis of the CCTV footage, we managed to get the last four digits of the car’s registration number,” a police officer said.

The CCTV footage also established that there were a few people on the road who witnessed the murder.

However, no one intervened to save Ishwar’s life. Some people were apparently taken by surprise as the attack happened in a matter of seconds.

Within hours, police were also informed that the car had met with an accident near Liberty Cinema. A team rushed to the spot and found Mahesh trying to retrieve his vehicle, and arrested him.

On interrogation, Mahesh told police that Ishwar was his neighbour in 2011 when the two had a fight over a petty issue. Mahesh was beaten up during the fight and since then he had been looking for an opportunity to strike back.

“Being a former neighbour, Mahesh knew that Ishwar went for morning walk and was waiting to attack him on Monday. Mahesh then damaged Ishwar’s car parked outside his home, and attacked him when he came out to check. Ishwar was seen in shorts and t-shirt running for his life in the CCTV footage,” Kumar added.

Mahesh’s family had shifted to Inderpuri in 2012, but he had a shop in Raigarpura. Ishwar’s family alleges that Mahesh had recently visited his factory and threatened him with dire consequences after a spat over a property issue.

They said Ishwar owned an embroidery factory in Karol Bagh and also dealt in property. A case of murder has been filed against Mahesh with Karol Bagh police station.
