JOIN USThe Centre has identified 287 obsolete laws to be repealed in the winter session of Parliament.
Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Monday said the Centre has sought feedback from the departments concerned under whose jurisdiction the outdated laws continue to exist, following the introduction of the Repealing and Amending Bill, 2014 to repeal 36 such laws in the previous Parliament session.
The government is also considering a report submitted by the Law Commission of India on September 12 which identified 72 antiquated statutes that have to be repealed, Prasad said in an informal interaction with mediapersons here.
The commission had listed 261 statutes, some dating back to the 19th century, which prima facie required repeal since they were inconsistent with modern times. The Law Commission is expected to give another report soon identifying yet another 50 obsolete laws, the minister said.
He added that the Centre was mulling a proposal to repeal 700 appropriation acts. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also formed a committee to identify other obsolete and outdated laws. The appropriation laws are passed each year by Parliament for the purpose of withdrawal of money from the Consolidated Fund of India. But after the withdrawal of money, such laws become redundant.
The P C Jain Commission, set up by the Vajpayee government, had given a report in 1998 recommending the axing of such appropriation bills.
