A bike-borne robber, who was speeding away after snatching a gold chain from an elderly woman at Byrasandra, was given chase and apprehended by a traffic constable on Friday.

The constable, Anand, 30, nabbed the chain-snatcher after pursuing him on his bike for about two kilometres. The suspect was identified as Janardhan, 45, a resident of Bannerghatta. He had snatched the chain from Divya Prabha, 62, who raised an alarm drawing Anand’s attention, who then gave chase.

As they reached Byrasandra, Anand thrust a powerful kick at the suspect’s bike.

Janardhan fell off the bike and Anand quickly grabbed him. Anand asked him why he was speeding, Janardhan said he was in a hurry. But Anand searched him and found a 120-gm gold chain, the police said.

Anand immediately called up the control room. In no time, personnel from the Tilak Nagar police station rushed to the spot and arrested the suspect.

“Anand was on his way to the Madiwala police station from South End Circle to deliver some documents. Just as he reached Tilak Nagar at noon, he saw a bike-borne miscreant snatching a woman’s chain. He chased him down,” a senior police officer said.

Police Commissioner, M N Reddi, later gave Janardhan a cash prize of Rs 25,000 along with a certificate of appreciation.
