Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Harsh Vardan, on Saturday, visited Jayadeva Institute of Cardio Vascular Sciences (JICVS) and Jayanagar General Hospital to examine the facilities in the two government hospitals.

After inaugurating the Centre for De-addiction at Nihmans, he took a tour of the institutes.
Expressing dismay over the rape of an elderly women near Bannerghatta Road on Friday, he said it was made mandatory for the rape victim to be rushed to ICU and kept under complete security once the case is reported.

Funds for essential drugs

Following complains from a patient about shortage of drugs, the minister suggested that 90 per cent of funds for medicines be allocated for essential drugs.

Rajiv (32), a patient in orthopaedics ward at Jayanagar General Hospital, complained about quality of food served by the hospital canteen.

Dr Harsh Vardhan said in addition to routine check done by Resident Medical Officers, surprise checks should be conducted.

“Once a week, all staff and doctors can take surprise tour to the kitchen and investigate the quality,” he suggested.

Preventive health

Stressing the need to focus on preventive health, he said, most causes for infant mortalities are preventable.

Assessing the facilities at Nimhans, JICVS and  Jayanagar General Hospital, he said there was need to focus on infant mortality rates, maternal mortality rates, and preventable deaths.

A meeting with all principal secretaries is being called next week to work out strategies for all health professionals towards prevention and control of various diseases, the minsiter added.
