Incessant rain continues to lash some districts

Some parts of the State continued to receive incessant rainfall, while it weakened in rest of the districts. Rain lashed several parts of Uttara Kannada and Dakshina Kannada districts, while parts of Shimoga district continued to receive moderate rainfall.

Most of the rivers that were in spate saw a reduction in the water level, thereby reducing the threats of flood. Several inundated roads were thrown open to traffic in the regions where showers took a break for a couple of days.

After a lull of two days, rainfall gained momentum in Uttara Kannada district. The coastal region received incessant rain, while the Malnad and semi-arid regions of the district received moderate rainfall.

Bhatkal, Honnavar, Kumta, Ankola and Karwar have been receiving continuous rain, while, it has weakened in Haliyal, Dandeli and Mundagod which come in the semi-arid regions.

Most roads in Karwar continue to remain inundated due to heavy rain. Motorists and pedestrians are finding it tough to cross roads, while normal life continues to be affected.
Intermittent rain continued to lash Dakshina Kannada district on Sunday. Meanwhile, rain receded in Kodagu district. Madikeri, Bhagamandala, Srimangala and Shanthalli experienced drizzling. The temperature came down drastically in Madikeri. Rain has receded in Udupi and Chikmagalur districts too.

No drastic rise

A few parts of Shimoga district received moderate rain on Sunday.  The water level in Linganamakki dam remained at 1,810.75 feet, against the maximum level of 1,819 feet.  
For the last two weeks, River Tungabhadra in Hospet was in spate. With a reduction in the rainfall, the flood threat in the river has also reduced. The inflow into the dam on Sunday morning was 15 lakh cusecs, while, by evening, it had reduced to 45,000 cusecs.

Cement coating wears off

The floods in River Tungabhadra that flows beside the fort region in Kampli town has reduced, thereby allowing the movement of light vehicles and pedestrians on the Kampli-Gangavathi bridge that had remained submerged for the last several days. Since the bridge remained submerged for long in the waters, the cement coating of the bridge has worn off. The iron chains, defence wall and the extension hooks on the bridge are all damaged. Since the Tungabhadra bridge is in a dilapidated condition, the Public Works Department has restricted the heavy vehicles from carrying load not more than 16 tonnes.

Receding water levels

River Krishna and its tributaries, which were flowing above the danger mark, have receded, as monsoon took a break in the last two days in the catchment areas of the reservoirs in Maharashtra.

The water level in these rivers has receded by a metre in the last 24 hours. However, three low-lying bridges at Chikodi in Belgaum district continued to remain submerged. Among the six low-lying bridges submerged in the taluk, Akkol-Sidnal, Bhojwadi-Kunnur and Karadaga-Bhoj bridges are now open for traffic movement.
