Last Updated 30 July 2014, 21:46 IST

Bangaloreans, who were feeling the pinch following a steep jump in the prices of vegetables and kitchen ingredients a fortnight ago, can now heave a sigh a relief as rates of some of these products have fallen sharply. However, tomato prices continue to be high.

The price of beans has plummeted from Rs 70 per kg to Rs 44 a kg. Similarly, the prices of onions that fluctuated between Rs 39 and Rs 45 a kg two weeks ago, are now priced between Rs 30 and Rs 25 a kilo. The price of coriander leaves too has come down from Rs 60 to Rs 35 per kg and ginger that used to cost Rs 148 is available at Rs 72 per kg.

Hopcoms Managing Director Kadire Gowda maintained that of late, the State received good amount of rainfall and the demand for the above produce has reduced.

“Hence, there has been a fall in prices. However, prices of tomato that was Rs 56 earlier continues to be the same and at retail outlets, including Hopcoms, the fruit is being sold at Rs 60 - Rs 65 per kg.”

He added that the increase in the prices of tomato is due to the shortage of supply. “Farmers are sending tomatoes to Bangladesh, Kolkata, Andaman, etc. The fluctuation in tomato prices will continue for another 15 days,” added Gowda.

He indicated that there are chances of steep increase in the prices of ‘Yelakki Banana’ as the production is less. Presently, it is being sold at Rs 72 per kg.

There has been a slight increase in the prices of green chillies, capsicum and carrot.
Green chillies, that was sold at Rs 45 a kg earlier, is available at Rs 72 a kg and the prices of carrot and capsicum have increased by Rs two to Rs four per kg.
