MPs told to take up road projects with state govts

The Centre on Wednesday urged members of Parliament to liaison with their respective state government, to clear projects worth Rs 1.8 lakh crore that have been stuck due to various reasons.

Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, replying to a discussion on the demands for grants for his ministry in the Lok Sabha, said the number of bottlenecks in building highways were within the jurisdiction of the state government or the district level authorities.

The minister made it clear that he was not trying to shift the blame on to the state governments but there was very little that he could do from the Centre. Gadkari cited the examples of West Bengal and Kerala, where road projects were stalled due to delays in land acquisition.

“If Kerala government is not ready for acquiring land then how can a four -lane road be constructed there? You as members have to decide on this.

I am making a request to you (to follow up the matter with the respective state government). Our government is keen to build roads,” Gadkari said. Participating in the discussion, members from several states had complained about the delay in national highway projects in their constituencies.
