Over 6.5k graft cases pending in CBI courts

Seventy more special CBI courts have been set up to try corruption cases, but over 6,500 graft cases are still pending trial in various such courts across the country, with Delhi and Maharashtra topping the list.

The latest figures show that 6,562 cases were pending as on May 31 this year, down from 6,617 last December.

This number could rise as and when investigation in 708 cases since 2011 are wound up and brought to court.

The CBI had registered 2,220 corruption cases since 2011, of which investigation has been completed in 1,512.

According to Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh, the CBI endeavours through constant monitoring or supervision of its action ensure that there is no delay in trials.

However, he hastened to add that the cases are disposed of by the courts as per due process of law, and the government does not intervene in judicial functioning.

The statistics showed that CBI courts in Delhi had the highest number of pending corruption cases, at 765, followed by Maharashtra (691) and West Bengal (646).

These three states accounted for around one-third of the total cases. Karnataka had 168 pending cases in CBI courts as of May 31, as compared to 167 in December 2013 and 188 in December 2012.
