Last Updated 15 July 2014, 20:04 IST

A recent report released by ‘Aspiring Minds’ has revealed that only 18.09 per cent of engineers have jobs, while 18.43 per cent of them are employable.

The third edition of the National Employability Report, Engineering Graduates - 2014, explored the various aspects of employability and factors affecting it. Emphasis was laid on the kind of jobs students aspire for and the percentage of those who actually ended up getting jobs.

“The low employability among engineering graduates is a cumulative outcome of poor education standards and higher demand for skilled employees, thereby creating a drastic skill gap in the country,” said Himanshu Aggarwal, Co-founder and CEO, Aspiring Minds.

The National Employability Report further revealed that corporates look for candidates with basic skills and those who do not require much training after being hired. Hence, candidates who did not meet the basic job requirements are left out in the entire process.

Out of the 1.2 lakh candidates, 91.8 per cent lacked programming and algorithm skills, 71.23 per cent lacked soft and cognitive skills, 60 per cent lacked domain skills, 73.6 per cent lacked English-speaking and comprehension skills and 57.96 per cent lacked analytical and quantitative skills, according to the report.

1.2 lakh grads surveyed Of the six lakh engineers who graduate annually, only 18.43 per cent are employable for the software engineer-IT services role, while a dismal 3.95 per cent are appropriately trained to be directly deployed on projects.  For core jobs in mechanical, electronics or electrical and civil jobs only a mere 7.4 per cent are employable, the report claimed.

The report is based on a sample of more than 1.2 lakh engineering students from over 520 engineering colleges across various states. All these candidates graduated in 2013.

The analysis and findings are based on the results of these students on AMCAT: Aspiring Minds Computer Adaptive Test.
