Daylong rain pounds U-K dist

Heavy rain lashed Uttara Kannada district throughout the day on Wednesday. Normal life went out of gear as it rained from dawn to dusk in Bhatkal (7.8 mm) Honnavar (16 mm), Kumta (29.8 mm), Ankola (25.2 mm), Karwar (24.8 mm), Sirsi, Siddapur and Yellapur.

Motorists and schoolchildren were put into inconvenience as roads were flooded with rainwater. However, there was scanty rain in semi-arid regions of Haliyal, Mundgod and Joida.

The intensity of waves in Arabian sea has increased following copious rains in the coastal region. Gigantic waves are hitting the shores raising fears of sea erosion in Haravada in Ankola taluk. Traditional fishing has been stopped due to the violent sea.

Dakshina Kannada

Intermittent rain lashed Mangalore on Wednesday. Rain water accumulated on roads affecting movement of vehicles and pedestrians. In the last 24 hours, Mangalore received 26 mm of rain Bantwal—14.1 mm and Puttur—11.4 mm.

The district is facing 67 per cent of deficit rain. The district should have received 2,330 mm rainfall since January. However, the total rainfall till now is only 779 mm.

Joint Director of Agriculture department Kempe Gowda told Deccan Herald that around 15,000 hectares of land would have been sowed in the district by this time in the event of good rains. However, only 7,000 hectares to 8,000 hectares has been sowed till now due to scanty rain.

Kodagu

Madikeri, Napoklu, Kutta, Shanthalli, Bhagamandala and Talacauvery have received good rainfall. The water level at Harangi reservoir stood at 2827.35 feet with an inflow of 363 cusecs.

Yadgir

It has been raining for the last four days in the district, in the city and surrounding villages. The heavy rain on Tuesday evening led to the filling up of most of the tanks.Residents had to spend sleepless nights as water entered houses in Naikal village and destroyed food grains that had been stored.

Clogged drains led to the roads being flooded. Rainwater inundated many agriculture fields.

Shimoga

Intermittent rain continued to lash various parts of the district on Wednesday. In the last 24 hours, Shimoga received the highest rainfall of 10.2 mm, followed by Hosanagar (5.8 mm), Thirthahalli (3. 6mm), Sorab (2.5 mm) and Shikaripur (2.4 mm). It rained heavily for about 20 minutes in the noon in Shimoga. Water level stood at 1748.65 feet in Linganamakki dam against the maximum level of 1819 feet. The inflow was 1079 cusecs and the outflow was 169 cusecs. The catchment area of the dam received a rainfall of 13 mm.

Bellary

Heavy showers coupled with thunder and lightning lashed the district since 3 pm. The residents reeling under sweltering heat heaved a sigh of relief as the rain brought the mercury level down.

Hagaribommanahalli, Hospet, Kudligi, Sandur and Siruguppa taluks too received heavy rain
