Consistent Vani eyeing fifth title

In-form Vani Kapoor will be gunning for her fifth title of the season when the Hero-KGA Women’s Pro Golf Championship tees off here on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old Delhiite, one of the most consistent players on the tour having finished runner-up in the Merit List for the last two seasons, appears determined to scale the summit this time around and has shown that fire on the course with fine performances in varied conditions.

Following back-to-back wins in the final two events of the previous season, Vani took off from where she had left, opening 2014 with two consecutive wins. She registered two more wins and with the Tour at its halfway stage -- seven events old -- and expected to miss top guns Sharmila Nicollet and Smriti Mehra for the better part, Vani would be keen to open the second half with a bang.

“I’m happy with my game,” said Vani after Tuesday’s practice round. “I’m hitting and putting well this season. Everything is falling into place very nicely this season. The key to success at the KGA is putt well which I’m doing at the moment” Talented Neha Tripathi, who arrived here last year with four wins in her kitty, has since withered away, her form deserting her completely.

At a place where she has won earlier, the bubbly Kolkatan will be keen to arrest her slide, considering the lack of a quality field.Sharmila, the top golfer in the country, just checked into the City on Tuesday morning while Smriti is away to the United States.

Anikita Tiwana, who finished runner-up to Smriti here last year, claimed her maiden victory last season and by the looks of it she will be contending with Neha and Vani for the top honours at the par-72 course. However, Sharmila would be eyeing a happy homecoming.
