Samarth starts favourite

After battling it out last week at the Karnataka Golf Association, the top amateurs of the country will renew their hostilities in the Tata Steel Karnataka Championship starting Tuesday at the Eagleton Golf Resort.

Leading the fight for top honours will be Samarth Dwivedi who scored a superb wire-to-wire victory last week. Ranked sixth in the Order of Merit List, Samarth sped away in the opening three rounds before enduring a bout of nerves during the early stages of the final round. He, however, regained his composure in the nick of time to eventually seal the win.

Hoping to make an impact in the seventh tournament of the season will be local lads Trishul Chinnappa and Syed Saqib Ahmed. Both of them, who hail from the KGA, disappointed last week at their home course and will be determined to make amends at the par-72 Eagleton where they’ve enough played golf to mount a serious challenge.

Apart from the duo, 11 from the top-15 Merit List will be in action this week, giving a string look to the field. The country’s top junior, Viraj Madappa -- No 11 in the Amateur Merit List -- is also in the fray.
