The Social Welfare department on Thursday disbursed a loan of Rs 50,000 each to the five families of Savita community (barbers) who were reportedly ostracised by upper caste people after they gave a haircut to dalits in Talur in Siraguppa taluk of Bellary district on May 30.

Social Welfare Minister H Anjaneya, who flayed the incident, said that every family would get a loan of Rs one lakh for their livelihood. The interest will be charged at four per cent. While the initial amount of Rs 50,000 was released on Thursday, the rest would be disbursed after the department completes the process of verification for eligibility of loan under Devaraj Urs Development Corporation.

The deputy commissioner and other officials who are at the village are now trying to resolve the issue by holding talks with both the communities.

Meanwhile, the department will create a special package of Rs five crore each for the Savita and Madivala (Dhobi) communities.
