Additional Director General of Police (KSRP) Dr P Ravindranath was bundled into a police vehicle and taken to the High Grounds police station from a cafe bakery on Cunningham Road on Monday noon, after he allegedly took pictures of a young woman on his mobile phone.

At the police station, a head constable allegedly removed the ADGP’s shirt and slapped him even after he produced his identity card and told him that he was an IPS officer.

The staff at the police station were not ready to buy Ravindaranath’s explanation till jurisdictional Deputy Commissioner of Police B R Ravikanthe Gowda arrived at the police station.

“I was locked inside the cell even after I identified myself. Why should I continue to be in the Indian Police Service?” a weeping Ravindranath told mediapersons near the bakery on Tuesday.

He had come there in an autorickshaw to pay the bill for Rs 72, for the coffee he had bought on Monday.

“I underwent medical test at a diagnostic centre and then went to have coffee at the bakery. I did not take the woman’s pictures at all. A man was sitting on the first floor. He made some signals and the woman came and picked a quarrel with me.

Soon, the man joined her and snatched away my wallet and mobile phone. The phone was with him till 5 pm. Only a policeman is empowered to seize such objects,” Ravindranath said.

“I want the police to verify my statement and the complainant’s statement as well.

The head constable said that he would fix me by invoking IPC Section 354 and he did so. On Monday, there was an allegation that I clicked the pictures. There was another allegation on Tuesday that I outraged the modesty of the woman. I am innocent and let there be an unbiased and impartial inquiry,” he said.

Ravindranath, who hails from Andhra Pradesh, is the son of Dalit leader P Mahendranath, who was a minister in the N T Rama Rao government. He had worked as a medical officer in Railways, before joining IPS in 1990. Ravindranath has served in various posts, including that of the Mysore police commissioner.
