Organic mangoes yet to hit the market

Organic mangoes are yet to hit the market in the City as a majority of the suppliers are yet to procure the variety.

Tanvir P, a staffer at an organic store, said his firm purchases Alphonso and Badami varieties from Ratnagiri district in Maharashtra, usually, in the first or second week of May every year. “Farmers this time told us that they were yet to pluck mangoes,” he said.

Raghavendra M T, assistant manager at Mother India Farms, said that other varieties of mangoes are ripened artificially by using calcium carbide.

“Organic mangoes are plucked after they fully ripen whereas artifically ripened mangoes are plucked even before they ripen. They are laced with harmful fertilizers for ripening. Hence organic mangoes take more time to ripen,” he said.
