Mistakes will cost SSLC evaluators dearly

Last Updated 18 April 2014, 18:42 IST

The process of evaluating SSLC answer papers is set to commence on April 20. A new system of penalising evaluators according to the degree of their mistakes was brought in last year by the Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board (KSEEB), which according to evaluators will go a long way in checking errors and helping students.

Rajesh Angadi, a school teacher in Koppal said: “Just one mark can make a big difference for students and can determine their chances of getting or not getting colleges and careers of their choice. This system will make teachers accountable for every mistake and make them cautious against committing such mistakes.”

According to the new system, evaluators who make mistakes in the range of zero to 15 marks will be issued a warning. Mistakes of 15 marks to 30 marks will attract a fine of Rs 800 to Rs 1,000. Mistakes of above 30 to 50 marks will invite a higher penalty and the evaluator’s name mentioned in the service register. Mistakes between 50 and 70 marks will invite blacklisting and a cut in the remuneration.

Girish Kaadlewad, another high school teacher from Gulbarga, is of the opinion that while penalties are necessary they however are not the solution. “Definitely there is a need to make teachers accountable for every mistake they make as we are dealing with the future of a student. However, merely relying on penalties will not do and the board should make an effort to address the needs of teachers,” he said.
