In an apparent attempt to seek the divine blessings and beat his opponents, Congress nominee from Varanasi Lok Sabha seat Ajai Rai reportedly offered liquor to the deity at a famous temple in the town on Thursday.

Rai, who has challenged the BJP prime ministerial nominee Narendra Modi at Varanasi, reached the famous Kaal Bhairav temple on Thursday morning and paid obeisance there.According to sources, Rai also offered country liquor to  the deity of Kaal Bhairav and performed ‘puja’ there.

Rai, who filed his nomination papers from Varanasi later in the day, also paid obeisance at the famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple and other temples in the town. According to Hindu mythology, country liquor is offered at the deity of Kaal Bhairav to please the god.

Kaal Bhairav is considered to be the ‘kotwal’ (cop) of the temple town and it is believed that he always guards the city of Varanasi.

Liquor is also offered at the Kaal Bhairav temple in Ujjain, in Madhya Pradesh. Hindus say that Kaal Bhairav also ‘consumes’ the ‘problems’ of the devotees along with the liquor.Rai is leaving no stone unturned to emerge as the main opponent to Modi. Samajwadi Party and BSP have also fielded their candidates from the seat.

Aam Admi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal has also jumped into the fray from the seat. The Congress nominee has also sought the help of the party's star campaigner Priyanka Gandhi for canvassing in Varanasi for him.
