Bus hits overtaking motorbike rider, kills him

A property dealer was killed after being hit by a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) low-floor air-conditioned bus in west Delhi’s Madipur on Monday night.

Police said the motorcycle-borne victim was overtaking the bus from the left, leading to the fatal accident.

The accident took place on Rohtak Road when 32-year-old Deepak Sethi was going home in east Delhi’s Jwala Nagar on his motorcycle at 8 pm on Monday.

The DTC bus number 949 was headed to Zakhira.

“Sethi was repeatedly trying to overtake the bus from the left side. At the time of the accident, there was not much space between the bus and the pavement, due to which the left side of the bus hit the motorcycle,” a police officer said.

The two vehicles were running at good speed at the time of the accident, due to which Sethi and his motorcycle were flung away. Injuries sustained on his head led to his death.

Police arrived at the scene by 8.30 pm, after which the body was sent to the mortuary for a post-mortem and later handed over to his family.

Bystanders reacted to the accident by damaging the DTC bus. “The windows of the bus were shattered by the mob. We arrived there and calmed them down,” the officer said.

The driver, who sensed public anger, escaped from the spot. He was arrested on Tuesday.

Police said Sethi worked with another person as a property dealer and is survived by a wife and a six-month-old daughter.
