Double glory for Manu Bajpai

Last Updated 28 February 2014, 16:29 IST

Karnataka’s Manu Bajpai scored a sweet double, capturing the singles and doubles titles in the CRS Trust-AITA ranking tennis tournament at the KSLTA courts here on Friday.

The 27-year old Bajpai first defeated top seed Nishant A Rebello 6-2, 6-1 in a lopsided singles final before teaming up with Sujit Sachidanand to lift the doubles crown as well, scoring a 6-3, 7-5 win over Nishanth and Rashein Samuel.

The singles final failed to live up to the expectations as the talented Nishanth, a trainee of the Mahesh Bhupathi Tennis Academy (MBTA), chose to go on the defensive from the very beginning.

On the other hand, Bajpai appeared very fluent, hitting fine winners on both flanks and harldy missing anything within his reach.

Bajpai quickly galloped to a commanding 5-0 lead in the opening set before the 18-year-old scored a break to trail 2-5.

Bajpai, however, held the eighth game to pocket the set comfortably.

In the second, Bajpai broke Nishanth in the second and fourth games to again establish a 4-0 lead. Nishanth then simply caved in, committing a spate of unforced errors to make things easy for Bajpai.

Resuls (finals):Men’s singles: Manu Bajpai (Kar) bt Nishanth A Rebello (Kar) 6-2, 6-1.
Doubles: Manu Bajpai/ Sujit Sachidanand (Kar) bt Nishnath A Rebello/ Rashein Samuel (Kar) 6-3, 7-5.
