Last Updated 04 February 2014, 19:30 IST

Ten tourists from Porbander in Gujarat died and 35 others injured late on Monday when a luxury bus in which they were travelling fell into a deep ditch on the ravines of the Khambatki Ghat along the Pune-Solapur highway.

The police said the Kolhapur-Mumbai luxury bus was travelling through the snaky roads of the ravines when the driver misjudged a blind curve and landed into a 20-foot-deep ditch.

Local media in Pune, quoting highway police official D Bhelare, said the accident probably occurred around 9:45 pm. Six passengers died at the accident site and four on the way to hospital.

Bhelare said the tragedy had a ripple effect. A container vehicle rammed into three private cars, which had stopped near the accident site to help the passengers trapped inside the bus. Four rescuers suffered bruises and their cars were mangled. Most of the injured were discharged from hospital in Shirval, while 11 “critical” victims continue to remain under observation.
