Siblings stage naked protest at Rashtrapati Bhavan

Last Updated 03 February 2014, 18:47 IST

Denied entry to Rashtrapati Bhavan, a brother-sister duo from Uttar Pradesh stripped outside the building on Monday, before being whisked away to a police station.

Police claimed the siblings were mentally ill and sent them to hospital for treatment.

The duo wanted to meet the President, but were not able to provide any convincing reason to the security personnel stationed outside. When they were stopped, they began to take off their clothes. Women security personnel covered 28-year-old Anuradha with a shawl before putting some clothes on her.

Her brother, Prabhat, 29, in the meantime, stripped down to his innerwear and began running towards the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Police chased him down and took the duo to Parliament Street Police Station.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi district) S B S Tyagi said, they gave different reasons for their action. “Once they said they wanted to meet the President as they have been cheated of their property. Later, the man said his father’s soul has entered his sister’s body and they would obey whatever she ordered,” said Tyagi.

The duo was also claiming different relationships with each other such as that of brother-sister and mother-son. It was finally established that they were actually siblings. However, the exact cause for their unusual mode of protest is yet to be established.

They were first sent to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for check up where doctors said they were suffering from mental illness. They were then sent to Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS) at Dilshad Garden for treatment.
