A class X student allegedly jumped off a three-storey building and killed herself at Chikkajala on Monday evening.

Harika Raj, 16, a student of Oxford English School in Shakti Nagar, Chikkajala, was the eldest daughter of Rajkumar, a second division assistant working at the Vidhana Soudha.

The family hailing from Kolar settled in the City several years ago. They were living in a rented portion in the three-storey Tayappa Building at Jala hobli for the past two months. Harika's mother is a homemaker and her younger brother Goutham Raj is a Class V student, also studying at Oxford English School.

On Monday, Harika wrote a unit test at the school in the morning, returned home and later attended a special class in the afternoon.

She returned home along with her younger brother in the evening. While her mother was with the girl’s brother in their house on the ground floor, Harika went to the terrace of the building and jumped to her death. Neighbours rushed to the spot as the girl came crashing down with a huge thud. She suffered multiple injuries and died on the spot.

An inconsolable Rajkumar, the girl’s father, told Deccan Herald that he was at a loss as to why his daughter took the extreme step.

He said the girl suffered from severe migraine from her childhood and was under medication. He said the girl was only average in her studies. However, he said there was no pressure on her at home.

He said the girl was not involved in an affair or any such issues.

Health issues

Girija, the girl’s teacher, said though the girl was average in studies, she had some health issues and they took extra care of her at school.

She said she was still in school when she came to know of her death. She said she was clueless why the girl committed suicide.

The body was shifted to Dr B R Ambedkar Medical College where an autopsy would be conducted on Tuesday morning. Chikkajala police have registered a case of unnatural death.
