Karnataka State Contractors’ Association on Friday demanded the State government to take immediate steps to clear Rs 8,000 crore pending bills of contractors working for various government departments.

Speaking at a press conference, the association president A S Chinnaswamy Raju said the government needs to pay Rs 1,800 crore to Public Works Department ( PWD); Rs 3,000 crore to various Neeravari Nigams; Rs 650 crore to City Municipal Corporations and Rs 1,800 crore to Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike ( BBMP) towards payment for contractors.

The bills are pending for more than one-and-half-years now.

Due to the non-payment, the development activities in the State has taken a backseat, he added.

The association members also added that due to the ongoing sand lorry owners’ strike in the last few days, there is a sudden rise in the sand price.

“Earlier for per load of sand, the contractors used to pay Rs 20,000 to Rs 22,000. But now it has increased to Rs 80,000. Due to this even public who are building houses are suffering,” said Vice-President, V Krishnareddy.
