Of fresh tunes and success

Interestingly, Vipin believes that anybody can sing, much like ABCD

It’s not often that music directors decide to take up acting. Of course, there are exceptions like GV Prakash and Vijay Antony! Following their footsteps, here’s another one —Siddharth Vipin of Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom (NKPK) fame, who has composed music recently for Hello Naan Pei Pesuren, a horror comedy. With this movie, he has debuted as a singer as well.

“I have made Vijay Sethupathi sing for this, which revolves around a north Madras guy. I thought it would be nice if a person like him sings it. As far as I am concerned, only the feel matters. So, when I approached him, he was more than happy to sing. I didn’t teach him anything, but just explained what I wanted. He did his job perfectly. I have acted as a saettu paiyyan, so, it’s going to be a double dhamaka,” says Vipin and adds, Hello Naan... would have different tunes from what he has created so far. For a B Com graduate from Loyola College with a passion for the piano and Carnatic rhythms, his journey so far has been quite crazy, though melodic, ride. Always one to experiment with new sounds, Siddharth wants to push boundaries. “I worked as a sound engineer previously for the Delhi-based rock band Euphoria, besides working for the sound effects for few Hollywood films. And then Tamil films happened,” he recalls. Better identified as the music director of the break up ‘prayer song’ from Idharkuthaane Aasaipattai Balakumara, Vipin says his strength lies in gaana numbers. “I believe that I can do good commercial music. Music has been an essential ingredient for the commercial success of any Tamil film. The Tamil film audience of today can make even an ordinary film a superhit on the strength of its music,” he adds. Interestingly, Vipin believes that anybody can sing, much like ABCD (Any Body Can Dance).

Up next, he has Ma Ka Pa Anand’s Navarasa Thilagam, a comedy flick directed by Kamran, in his kitty. “I am acting in a small role in the film, apart from scoring music for it,” he says. Ask him what comes first? Acting or composing, and he answers, “It’s the latter. I only do roles that suit me,” he signs off.
