Actress Shilpa Shetty: Iconic yogini

Actress Shilpa Shetty talks about her love for practising yoga
Shilpa Shetty is svelte and sexy, an alliteration that suits her well. She attributes her shapely form to yoga, and this why she was the perfect celebrity icon to endorse World Yoga Day in Bengaluru on June 21. The actress-turned-entrepreneur performed yoga for 30 minutes in front of an enthralled audience of over 20,000 people.
“For me it’s a great day to celebrate yoga, which has finally been given its due, and a platform it deserves. Yoga is our heritage but it is given more importance abroad. Fourteen years back, when I started practising yoga, it wasn’t considered a ‘cool thing’, but now perceptions have changed,” says Shilpa.
Reminiscing about her love affair with yoga, Shilpa says, “People first noticed it when I would do yoga in the Big Brother House in London. People wrongly assume that you can’t lose weight with yoga. If you even do three Suryanamaskars the right way, you will sweat. In fact, I gained my core strength after my pregnancy through yoga. I weigh 59 kilos and by lifting my whole body, I’m actually lifting 50 kilos... Which other exercise allows you to do this?”
There is a sense of calmness in her demeanor, and Shilpa depicts no sign of stress despite her hectic lifestyle. “I lead a disciplined lifestyle, eating the right thing at the right time. I allow myself to binge on Sundays. I always do my own pranayma or kapal bhatti even if it’s for five minutes in the shower, and that is my stress buster,” she says.
Shilpa is constantly dabbling with new ventures, but she says she has a clear cut approach to business. “I only leverage my name to products I believe in. The TV shopping deal happened after I started my line of jeans and sold saris that I designed on another shopping channel. So Raj and I decided that this sounded like a great venture.” she says.
Shilpa’s face lights up instantly when she talks about her husband Raj. “We have a great friendship. Raj is constantly surprising me with gifts and holidays. The Jamaica birthday vacation was a wonderful surprise but I was like, now everyone knows I have turned 40,” she jests. Ask her if she is good with surprises too and she says, “I’m terrible at these things and I tell him to not expect anything from me.”
The couple’s two-year-old son Viaan is their first priority. “One of us is always with him. Right now I’m in Bengaluru so Raj is with Viaan and they are celebrating my mum’s birthday. Raj and I both come from middle-class families and we still follow those values. That's why Viaan is not indulged too much. I’d like to control that as long as I can," she quips.
