Zoya is brighter than I am: Farhan Akhtar

Farhan Akhtar talks about his sister, his film with Big B and more

Farhan Akhtar is a man of many hats. Ask him which hat he thinks he wears the best, though, and his response is simple — “I believe that if you have the passion and potential to do something well, then you should flaunt it without hesitation. Live for the day and do what you want to, no matter what or how many things you want to do. Even if something is entirely experimental, you always have a chance to succeed,” he says and points out that through the course of his own career, one thing seems to have led to another fairly organically. “Rock On reignited my passion for music and performing live for an audience. But due to his film projects it isn’t possible for him to perform regularly.

The film projects keeping him busy include the upcoming Dil Dhadakne Do directed by his sister Zoya Akhtar. Talking about his relationship with her, Farhan avers, “She is and has always been an amazingly honest person. I have never known her to lie about anything to the point where, even if she has to tell you brutally honest stuff about you, she will. She will show you the mirror, not worried at all that you could hold it against her. That is one trait that I respect in her hugely and it has helped me maintain a certain perspective about things myself, in my own life. I take a lot of advice from her. She has friendships that have lasted 25 to 30 years, and that says a lot about her. She cares about her family and friends and is really straightforward about what she thinks. I am more diplomatic than she is and am happy to keep my opinions to myself. That’s the difference between us. We have an ongoing Scrabble war too! She wins sometimes and I win at others.

She is definitely brighter than I am when it comes to life’s experiences since she grew up earlier than I, and would shelter me from everything that went on in our lives. Also, being a girl, she was inadvertently closer to sharing my mother’s life and experiences. She knew a lot more than I ever did.”

Dil Dhadakne Do will be followed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Wazir, where the actor shares the screen with Amitabh Bachchan. “This is the first time that I am working with Raju (Hirani). I play an ATS officer in the film and my character and Mr Bachchan’s character are bound together by the grief of the loss of a loved one. Within that combined grief, how we end up finding redemption through each other’s loss is what forms the crux of the film.
