Movie review 'Rowdy Fellow': Good attempt by debutant director

It would have been a good one if Krishna Chaitanya addressed the issue as it is and not in parts

Director: Krishna Chaitanya

Cast: Nara Rohit, Visakha Singh, Rao Ramesh, Posani, Supreet and Ajay

Rating: 2.5 stars

Nara Rohit is choosing different subjects in his last few films. His latest ‘Rowdy Fellow’ also generated a little bit curiosity as they projected it a different one. Krishna Chaitanya, a lyric writer, turned as director and making his debut with this film. Visakha Singh plays the female lead.

Rana Pratap Jayadev (Nara Rohit) is a rich kid and returns to India from USA. After landed in India, Rana Pratap straightaway went to a club and punch person. The reason is an ego problem. The person pushed Rana Pratap three years back in a quarrel between friends. So he didn’t do the same at the time of the fight, because he left USA, so after three years when he returns to India, he does it. It shows his character and his ego. Meanwhile, Rana is in a tiff with a Superintendent of Police in an incident, where the top cop slaps him. Then Rana’s ego hurts and decided to join in police department to teach a lesson to the officer. Rana Pratap feels that with money anything can do, and he gets Sub Inspector post. He was posted to Rajolu village in Krishna district near Kolleru Lake where the SP is also there. Though Rana Pratap is not doing his duty properly, but a few incidents change his mind and decided to fight against a local MP Durga Prasad (Rao Ramesh). From here onwards the story turns serious and he decided to fight for the people against the baddies.

Another young debutant Krishna Chaitanya coming as director. He should appreciate as he takes the Kolleru Lake encroachment by political leaders as the subject, but here he couldn’t establish it properly in the film. The director establishes the first half with the characters and only in the second half it gets some momentum. Director Krishna Chaitanya is good for taking a social subject, but when it comes to the screen, it should me more dramatic. The dialogues are very impressive and the cinematography is also good. Music is average and there is a remix song of late NTR’s film ‘Bhale Thammudu’. The action scenes choreographed well.

When it comes to the performance, it’s Nara Rohit’s show all the way. His dialogue diction is perfect and emotions are also well played. He is a good actor, but the problem is he is looking too fat and put on lot of weight. For a rich kid he needs a smart look and for the cop also the body language and the looks are different, which is not there. He should reduce his eight for a bit. Visakha Singh made her debut in Telugu as the female lead and she looks good, though her role is not an important one.

The other highlight is definitely Rao Ramesh. The way he narrates the dialogue and sometimes only expressions speaks. First time he is playing a full length villain and he justifies it and proved that he can elevate the character with his performance. Gollapudi Maruthi Rao is a seasoned actor and appeared in a film after a long gap. Satya, Praveen and Posani played in comic roles and they get you a few laughs. Supreet and Ajay as baddies are as usual.

On the whole, it’s a good debut for Krishna Chaitnya as director as he comes up with a real problem. If Krishna Chaitanya addresses the issue as it is, this film could have been a good one, but there are many drawbacks and he shows the problem only in parts. But this film is fresh when comparing to the regular masala films.
