Tea with a Goddess

These paintings capture different moods of Durga, with tea playing an important part

Artist Bipasha Sen Gupta’s recent art collection titled Titiksha comprises of several sepia-tinted paintings of Goddess Durga. Through each painting, the artist has tried to capture a different aspect and mood of Durga’s personality.

Speaking of her collection which has been displayed at Gallery Space, Bipasha says, “Titiksha means endurance, so in that sense I have tried to portray the femininity and strength of the goddess.”

These series that took her around six months to complete, consist of paintings of Kali, Saraswati and of an owl, the vahana of Lakshmi. Bipasha is also an environmentalist, and for her recent set of paintings she has used tea-soaked paper. Some of the paintings appear visibly darker as they were done using tea liquor, soaked overnight. She says, “For getting the texture right, I have used tea bags, dust tea, tea leaves as well as green and camomile tea. Since I used perishable products, I have treated the paintings with a matte finish for the purpose of longevity,” she adds.
