Flavoured rums are not just for novices who want to try out a new spirit. They are potent and work well in the summer too

Hyderabad: Flavours in spirits are not the preserve of just vodka. Of course the Absolut range of flavoured vodkas is massive and covers everything from orange to acai berry, but don’t underestimate the power of flavoured rums. Not only do flavoured rums taste delicious but sadly, they are also often misconstrued as the prerogative of rum novices.
One couldn’t be farther from the truth. Flavoured spirits are not only for people trying to get initiated into drinking a certain kind of liquor. They’re also for those who know their alcohol and are willing to experiment.
The flavoured rum category is very popular the world over and is slowly but steadily gaining some steam in India too. Captain Morgan spiced rum is one of the most liked spirits in the world. Spiced rums often have additional flavours such as vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and sugar. Traditionally this was done to mask inferior spirit, but flavoured rums have become drinks in their own right.
Normally less potent than regular white or aged rums, flavoured rum is infused with extracts from various rums such as apple, banana, mango, orange, citrus, and coconut and can often taste nice served straight with ice, although several flavours are becoming an important part of many tropical-style cocktails.
Malibu is probably one of the oldest flavoured rums we’ve seen in the Indian market. This delicious Caribbean rum is refreshing and exotic, and comes in flavours like banana, melon, pineapple and mango. It goes down smooth and easy and is never harsh.
Cruzan rum too is incredibly smooth. With distinctive flavours like guava, pineapple, vanilla and mango, this rum blends perfectly into cocktails. Flavoured rums are often consumed on the rocks. One of the best ways to also try them is to refrigerate the rum instead of adding ice to it.
