Quite unlike RGV’s recent films, Anukshanam is nothing like Tollywood has seen before

Hyderabad: A psycho thriller from director Ram Gopal Varma, Anukshanam is based on murders that happened in different cities. Revathi returns to Tollywood after a long time with this film, playing a key role, Vishnu Manchu plays the lead and Madhu Shalini plays an important character.
The story is simple. A cab driver (Surya) kills young girls and ACP Goutham (Manchu Vishnu) is in charge of a special team to nab the killer. The murders increase in number and the city comes to a standstill. When routine police investigations do not yield results, the ACP takes the help of Sailaja (Revathi), a research specialist on psycho killers. How the police arrest the killer with her help, forms the crux of the story. There are no songs in the film.
Ram Gopal Varma is a director who always follows his heart. He experiments a lot and does not base his judgement on the fate of his films. Now, with this film he has brought in a new subject for the Telugu film audience. Another good thing about RGV is that most of his films are technically good and he handles and projects actors very differently from any pervious film that they would have worked in. Manchu Vishnu plays a cop and this is his best performance till date. Credit goes to Varma who has portrayed him very differently and kudos to Vishnu for having performed the challenging role excellently.
Another highlight is a new actor, Surya, who plays the psycho killer. He is superb and the element of surprise in the film. Revathi is at ease with the character which supports the film throughout. Supreet and Sravan as special cops fit their roles well. For Brahmanandam and Kota this film is a regular one. Madhu Shalini has done a good job as a TV reporter. Tejaswini and Navdeep appear in a cameo.
Though the subject is interesting, RGV seems to be in a hurry to complete the film in the second half. A few scenes are in a typical cinematic way, where killer escapes from a bunch of policemen. The way the killer attacks the policemen in not convincing. During the second half, the director concentrates more on the emotions of the killer, instead had he shown more of the police investigation angle the story would have been more interesting.
The dialogues and the background music are very good. As in many of his other films, Varma’s technical brilliance is seen in this one too. The way he captures the emotions of the actors in a close up is commendable.
This film is not a song-dance-action formula and is thus a completely new genre for the Telugu audience. For RGV this film is a lot better than any of his recent ones like Ice Cream. Those who like RGV’s films will definitely like this one and all others must watch it for Vishnu’s performance!
