Monica Dogra's off the beaten track

Monica Dogra talks about playing a lesbian in the short film Relapse
Mumbai: Monica Dogra has left her Dhobi Ghat days far behind. And though the actress and singer might not have the commercial success that other mainstream actresses do, she is quietly making a mark for herself. One such example is her upcoming 12-minute short film, Relapse. The film is about two lesbians whose marriage begins to fall apart when one of them decides to undergo a sex change operation to become a man.
When the script came to Monica, she didn’t have any qualms about doing the role. “I treated the script like any other subject. There was no divide in my head because the role was that of a lesbian. For me it was about two people in love,” she says, adding, “I liked the script, the role, the director and actress Casey Legler. So I just couldn’t say no to the film.”
Monica plays Tamar, the wife of Casey, an architect who wants to undergo a sex change operation. “The problems that Tamar and her wife share are what could happen to anyone in real life too. Tamar is the rock in the relationship, she loves her wife but is torn in between everything. Imagine the struggle she is going through,” Monica explains.
Monica is glad she was part of a film that deals with the LGBTQ community. “I try to do whatever little I can. I’ve tried to maintain diversity in every project I take up, so this was an attempt too,” says the actress who will also be launching her fashion line and is currently working on a single.
Ask her how she feels people will react to the film, especially Bollywood, and she says, “Bollywood and many people are quite open-minded these days. In the film industry itself, you have a lot of people who are from the LGBTQ community, so yeah, it’s a welcome change.”
