Uproar in RS over Prez Kovind's comparison of Mahatma Gandhi with Deen Dayal Upadhyay

New Delhi, Jul 26: The Congress has criticised President of India Ram Nath Kovind for omitting the name of Jawaharlal Nehru in his inaugural speech and equating Mahatma Gandhi with Jan Sangh leader Deen Dayal Upadhyay.

In what can be termed as an ‘uproar’ in Rajya Sabha, opposition leader Anand Sharma hit back saying, “Gandhi ji has done a lot for the nation and his equation with Deen Dayal Upadhyaya was a big disrespect. Jawahar Lal Nehru and Indira Gandhi's names were not even taken”.

Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad also came in support of Sharma and blamed the Centre for constantly disrespecting the Nehru family and called the omission of names as ‘deliberate’.

Meanwhile, Union Defense Minister Arun Jaitley reacted sharply to the statements by Congress leaders and said "the Chair should be guided that the zero hour can't run only for the benefit of the television channels”.

This enraged Congress even more with Azad saying, "I would request the Chair to remove the comment from the record. We never speak for television camera because most of the channels cover the ruling party. They have no freedom for the last three years," he said.

The chairperson, however, did not allow a discussion on the argument calling it "irrelevant".

In his maiden address to the nation as the 14th President of India, Kovind said that India’s independence was the result of efforts of thousands of patriotic freedom fighters led by Mahatma Gandhi. “Later, Sardar Patel integrated our nation. Principal architect of our Constitution Babasaheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar instilled in us the value of human dignity and of republican ethic.”

He called for the need “to sculpt a robust, high growth economy, an educated, ethical and shared community, and an egalitarian society, as envisioned by Mahatma Gandhi and Deen Dayal Upadhyay ji”.

Congress failed in the last 70 years to teach Indians about the ideas and values of Gandhi and Nehru. Few Indians today, if asked to state what Gandhi and Nehru stood for, would be able to articulate the ideas and values off Gandhi and Nehru.

Deendayal did not subscribe to the idea of Indian nationalism and stood for Hindu nationalism. He refused to accept Muslims and Christians as co-nationalists despite residing in India for hundreds of years. According to him only Hindus could be the flag-bearers of Indian nationalism as only they worshipped the Motherland. For them Motherland was like the goddess Durga wielding ten weapons. Hindus formed a stable nation as only they had common view of life. For him,
“Hindutva alone is the basis of nationalism in Bharat. It is altogether wrong for the Hindus to prove their nationhood by European standards. It has been accepted as axiomatic for thousands of years.”

Deendayal, like KB Hedgewar, founder of RSS, and Golwalkar loved centralisation of power and hated federalism as an integral part of Indian Constitution. According to him, “Ethos of Bharat is such that a Unitary form of government would fit in and that in the very first article of the Constitution, a clear statement that ‘Bharat shall be a Unitary State’ was essential.”
President Kovind, however, opposed reservations in government jobs for religious minorities in 2010, when he was acting as a BJP spokesperson. The backdrop was the Ranganath Misra Commission report, that recommended a 15% quota in government jobs for socially and economically backward sections among religious and linguistic minorities in India. Back then, Kovind opposed the commission’s report saying, "Including Muslims and Christians in the Scheduled Castes category will be unconstitutional." He also added, "Islam and Christianity are alien to the nation,".
It is unfortunate that present RSS/BJP regime in India led by PM Modi instead of strengthening Indian democratic-secular polity are resurrecting Hindutva ghosts and ideologies from the past which have been inimical to our polity. Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya’s Hindutva politics needs to be consigned to the dustbin of history. However, Deendayal mysterious murder needs answer.

There are many conspiracy theories about Upadhyaya’s death: Balraj Madhok, another of Jan Sangh’s founding members, has said categorically on many occasions that Upadhyaya’s was a murder, not an accident. After an early retirement from politics in the 1970s owing to differences with the dominant Vajpayee faction within Jan Sangh -- Madhok spent most of his time writing books and columns.
He also wrote a memoir called Jindagi Ka Safar, in three volumes: the third volume, which he published in 2002, begins around the same time as Upadhyaya's death. Here he writes that he heard, from multiple sources, about the involvement of certain senior Jan Sangh leaders in the murder. Madhok hints at the power tussle within the RSS responsible for the murder. He also blames, particularly Nanaji Deshmukh and Vajpayee, for sabotaging the government inquiry and trying hard to pass it off as an unfortunate accident rather than a cold-blooded murder. When the Janata government came to power in 1977, Madhok writes, Subramanian Swamy requested the then Home Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh to start a fresh inquiry, but alleges that the Jan Sangh ministers, Vajpayee and Advani, thwarted the effort.
Like any other leader or cadre of the RSS, Deendayal too did not participate in the freedom struggle. He denigrated the glorious freedom struggle in the following words:
“We were obsessed by the misleading notion that freedom consisted merely in overthrowing foreign rule. Opposition to a foreign government does not necessarily imply genuine love of Motherland During the struggle for independence great emphasis was laid on the opposition to British rul.It came to be believed that whoever opposed the British was a A regular campaign was launched in those days to create utter dissatisfaction against the British by holding them responsible for every problem and misery which the people in our country had to face.”
