Udupi, May 18: “Nearly Rs 58.5 crores have been approved from union government’s highways fund for Kaup constituency under recommendation from MP Shobha Karandlaje,” said BJP district president Mattaru Rathnakar Hegde.

“Rs 270 crores have been released for Udupi district from CRF and Rs 79 crores for Kaup main road and highway road. A DPR of the works has been prepared and the process is in tender stage. Congress MLAs are claiming that the project is theirs,” he alleged in the press conference held in BJP office on Wednesday, May 17.

“Before municipal council elections, the MLAs had promised of Rs 400 crores for the development of the constituency. They even say that after elections Rs 150 crores were released. However no funds have been received in excess of Rs 50 crores for city development, tourism and lake development. The MLA should clarify about it,” he urged.

“Though the union government has given priority for cleanliness, the situation in Kaup municipality is such that one cannot walk. No action has been taken for disposal of waste and for drainage project. Preliminary work in waste disposal unit at Ellooru is not taken up,” he alleged.

“Drinking water problem in Kaup has become acute and no action has been taken so far regarding drinking water project. Though Bahugrama drinking water project for supplying water from Manipur Papanashini lake was announced without planning, nothing has been done in this regard. Instead of that, if dam is constructed near Shirva Nadibettu, several grams will benefit,” he suggested.

“There is discrimination in supplying water to BJP administered gram panchayats. The government is indulging in politics in temples, schools, hospitals and police stations. The state government has not submitted a proposal for construction of Hejmady port that had to be constructed in the ratio of 50:50 between union and state government,” he said.

Lack of law and order

“Law and order in Kaup is deteriorating. Theft of cattle and killing of cattle is taking place uninterrupted. Cattle is slaughtered at Moolooru and Mallari with the indirect support from the government. Though ganja and opium peddling goes on at Kanchinakda, Padubidri, police are not taking action,” he said.

“BJP supports formation of Kaup taluk. But the tahsildar is not appointed even after several months of announcement. Work concerning taluk has not started. Rs 50 crores were set aside during BJP rule and Brahmavar was announced taluk. How justified is it that Brahmavar taluk is declared again without implementing any work concerning the taluk. What is the significance of declaring 49 taluks after keeping only one crore funds?” he asked.

Former MLA Lalaji R Mendon, BJP district vice-president Suresh Shetty Gurme, chief secretary Yashpal Suvarna, spokesman Katpadi Shanker Poojary, zilla panchayat member Geethanjali Suvarna, Shilpa G Suvarna, Kaup block president Prakash Shetty Padebettu, chief secretaries Muraleedhar Pai and Jitendra Shetty were present.
