Mangaluru: Red Building Lane road widening- Corporator Asha D'Silva clarifies

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SB)

Mangaluru, Apr 10: Corporator of Kankanady Valencia ward Asha Gretta D’ Silva clarified her stance on the road widening project at Red Building Lane and also dismissed the allegations against her made by the residents of the lane.

Speaking to Daijiworld.com, she said, "Currently, there are no plans of road widening at Red Building Lane. But considering future development, people constructing new house or buildings should spare adequate amount of space for road. If not, they will be denied permission for the building by the corporation. That is the rule of Mangaluru City Corporation. This is not applicable for existing buildings or compounds. My first priority as a corporator was to provide a good drainage system at Red Building lane. Already, Rs 12 lac has been sanctioned for the project. Based on fund availability, I will try to finish it."

Refuting allegations made by some residents of Red Building Lane, she said, "We never prepared any estimate report for road widening nor sent notices to residents. Then how will the project be undertaken? In future, there are possibilities of demand for wider road. Compounds and buildings may be demolished. So keeping in mind the welfare of the residents, we are advising them to leave 20 feet space for road before starting any constructions."

"I never played politics in development works and for my own benefit. The allegations against me are purely based on political motivation and personal grudge. Some residents have already grabbed the road area and used it for constructing of the compound. They are behind all these allegations. They are spreading wrong information and fear among the residents," she clarified.

Answering a query on the survey officials who had visited Red Building Lane, she said, "I do not know who sent them and why they visited the area. After getting information from your media, I spoke to corporation officials and asked for clarification."

History of case

As per the version from some residents, they had given a petition to provide drainage facility at Red Building Lane in 2014. It was conveyed to them that the proposal was approved in a council meeting and standing committee meeting in 2016. But later when a resident of the locality applied for a license for a new house, he was told that as the road would be widened there to 9 meters, his license cannot be sanctioned as per plan.

Some residents sought information on the road widening proposal through Right To Information (RTI) Act on 10 October 2016. They received a reply on 29 November 2016, which said that the residents themselves had demanded for road widening in 2014 through a petition.

Upon verification, they learned that the petition submitted for the drainage was ‘doctored’ and the same was turned into a petition demanding road widening.

Recently some protests were held on the lane and also near Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) demanding cancellation of proposed road widening.

In many areas/localities there are still 3 to 4 feet lanes where even one cannot take scooter to his house. When such a narrow car street road has been widened and many lanes were widened by 10 ft roads the MCC has to take immediate action to widen those lanes which are within Mangalore City. otherwise what is the meaning in terming our City as Smart City. we better call it Caat City !

    Beuwolf and all similar adhikaprasangis

You don't know half the truth here. The corporator is just a pawn here. There are other influential people/ gundas even behind this entire facade. There are builders who fund political parties. They used the corporator to sanction the entire thing by fraudulent signatures of the residents. It's not as simple as it looks. Why else would she lie to procure residents' signatures?? Anyway nobody's opinion really alters essential facts. In future no other area people must be duped this way. We Red Building Lane residents will see to it.

    Beowulf,

''Do you have the experience of sacrificing piece of your property for the development of common road?''

I have the experience... That is the difference between 'YOU' and me.. Talking big big things...

What has the experience got to do with it? The only reason you are saying the things that you are saying is that you want to convince yourself that you are not selfish. First of all, i don't know why are many of you attacking me for my comments.

Now just imagine what arguments you people make can be even be applied to any protest any road widening project. Why should people whose properties are next to any highway give up their land? Why should we give up land for building dam?( Farmers suffer over here so that people like you sitting in city can enjoy water supply).

Mangalore is full of lanes and sometime it is very very difficult for 2 vehicles to pass . Why particularly red building lane is targeted. All these years there were no proper planning in India specially Mangalore and MCC was not following the rules strictly due to corruption. Now, suddenly everybody got woken up by smart city wave. If all residents has to leave 20 ft then it is a big loss for them. I was happy to see how Doomavathi temple road-Chilimbi residents cooperated and widened the small lane to proper road. Now all over lane residents should cooperate and volunteerly should leave 5 to 10 ft on each side of the road for betterment of the people. Let us be smart Mangaloreans.

Imagine you have build your house in 5 cents property then how much property out of it would you like to donate ( by forcibly) for road widening . Will you allow your house to be demolished.
Answer us that then jump into a conclusion .

Read properly, I said volunteerly and there is no force. I know it is difficult for Residents having smaller plots. Then the government should relocate them with double the size of the plot with proper compensation.

Well I was reading the the comments section and i felt that most of the peaple dont know the exact scene behind road widening issue. let me tell about this. Red building lane is just a residential lane where it connect 150 houses and nowhere it connect to the other road or main lane. where as the exsting road is enough as even lorry and busses also can pass by. in case if it is required let peaple ask for it. not Just the corporator. well said some one in the comment section, all these choes were raising about the same issue from past 2, 3 months, there are no plans as such. public servent means work for the community not for the self gain. at least in mangalore educated people like you set an example to rest of india and the world.
Those who are readers i would like to say that improvement is required where is neccesory. not any where, every whre or for the personal gain. Thanks

If some reasonable amount is paid as compensation all will leave atleast few feets for widening the road. but the MCC pays on the basis of Regn. value or may be according to their whim and fancy. thats why all this confusion arises and people protest. However when our City becomes smart our lanes be widened so that all lane residents are benefitted. Moreover the land value will also increase in case lane is widened.

For those commenting here my question is how much of land have you left to the road in front of your own house? People pay their hard earned money for every cent and pay house taxes and self assessment property tax. Pay compensation as per market value under land equitation act 2013.

People say others are selfish and do not want to give land for road. Why is the Corporation selfish and does not want to pay for acquisition? We pay for the land we buy, we pay taxes for the land we bought...then why not get paid when the corporation or Govt. wants to take our land back? Why is the Govt. or corporation selfish?? Further certain areas can be designated as Residential houses only. Designate Red Building lane as Houses only area (meaning "no apartment blocks") and submit to the will of the people in that area.

i still wonder what made this corporator to come out now in defending herself against 150 Families living here in rebuilding.
Fiends someone please enlighten me if any elections are nearby .
At first place 150 Families living in the locality can never be wrong. If there was any misunderstanding it was our Corporator's job to sit and speak with the people who elected her unanimously.
If anyone wants justification or any sort of clarification visit the place and meet the locals.
However regardless the above we still want our Drainage facility work to be completed as promised and for what our signatures were taken by our corporator,

    Beowulf, Mangalore,
First of all you have not seen the current road.
It is inside a residential area, approximately 4 mtr wide. Fire trucks and buses can easily move.
What is the necessity of a 9 mtr road inside a residential area?
People have to leave further 6 mtrs(20 ft) on each side?
No body stops development work. People only protest against one sided unscientific decisions.

If they have existing 4 meter road, each side they have to donate 2.5 mters each side. This is called Daana Petra. Corporation will not approve the plan without this letter. This is rule applys when anyone applying for new constructions in Mangalore. How come Red Building locals not aware of this rule. When city grow , some people suffer . Corporation should come with new ideas. They should exempt resident from paying taxes for 10 years.
