Mangaluru: Lax security at prison helped under-trial Jinnappa to flee

Mangaluru, Mar 11: Lax security at the district prison here has emerged as the single most important lapse that helped under-trial from Bolkallugudde House in Gardady village of Padangady in Beltangady taluk, Jinnappa Parava (43) to escape. The jail staff said Parava had a brown Lungi around his waist and chequered cloth on his shoulder when he jumped over the wall and fled. He was not wearing any vest or shirt.

Jinnappa was arrested after being accused of inviting a girl to his home with the promise of providing her a job, and then raping her there on August 19, 2015. The case, which was originally registered in Uppinangady station, was later shifted to Dharmasthala police station.

Jinnappa was one among the 14 persons who were given the work of preparing the morning breakfast. Like others, he used to get up at 3.30 am and put the gas cylinder placed near the office of the jail superintendent in 'on' position for beginning the cooking work. On Friday morning, he switched the gas on at 3.39 am. He escaped through the nearby jail gate, scaled the jail compound wall, and jumped outside. People who grew suspicious after finding that Jinnappa had not returned after putting the gas flow on, searched for him in the entire jail thereafter in vain.

The CCTV camera showed that Jinnappa Parava, after starting the LPG flow, directly went out through the main door of the prison, went over the compound wall of the old jail, moved to the right direction by walking on the wall, reached near Canara College compound, jumped from there and escaped at 3.58 am.

The watch and ward staff at the gate near the room of the jail superintendent are guilty of negligence in allowing Jinnappa to move outside. The fact that the height of the old jail compound wall is comparatively less also helped him. Although there is electric fencing for the compound wall of old jail, its power connection was severed, which came as a blessing for Jinnappa. The jail is being guarded by personnel of industrial security force and home guards. It is said that on Friday night, a home guard was deputed on security duty.

Jail superintendent, Krishnamurthy, in his complaint filed in Barke police station, has blamed negligence of watch and ward staff of the jail as responsible for this incident. Barke police, who have registered a case, have conveyed this information to all the police stations with full information about Jinnappa.
