Blood, sweat and tears: 5 terror attacks that shook the nation in 2016

1. Pathankot attack

The year began with a terror strike from across the border. On 2 January, a team of fidayeen stormed into Pathankot airbase, killing seven jawans. Four terrorists were gunned down in an encounter that lasted for four days.

The NIA chargesheet has named Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar, his brother Rauf Asghar and two of their accomplices as the main accused.

Rauf had released a video soon after the attack, claiming the responsibility for the attack. The video was full of praise for his brother Azhar.

2. Pampore attack

On 25 June, two of Lashkar-e-Taiba's (LeT) suicide attackers targeted CRPF's convoy in the Pampore region of J&K. The attack claimed the lives of eight jawans, injuring 22 others. LeT claimed the responsibility of the terror incident.

A few months later, Pampore witnessed yet another terror attack. This time, the terrorists barged into the building of the Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI) situated along the Srinagar-Jammu highway.

Two terrorists were killed in an encounter that lasted 60 hours. Terrorists had also targeted the same building in February, killing three army personnel. Three attackers were also neutralised in the attack.

3. Poonch attack

On 11 September, four LeT terrorists and six security jawans were killed in a three-day long encounter at mini secretariat building in Poonch. The presence of militants in Poonch, as it is so close to the Army's Brigade Headquarters, was seen a major security breach.

It was the longest encounter between security forces and terrorists since the Pathankot attack.

4. Uri attack

On 18 September, 19 army jawans were killed when fidayeen attacked 12 brigade headquarters in Uri near the LoC. All of four assailants were gunned down in an encounter that followed. The then DGMO Lt General Ranbir Singh claimed the attack had been planned and executed by Jaish-e-Mohammed.

The slain army personnel belonged to Dogra regiment and Bihar regiment. It has been recorded as one of the deadliest attacks on Indian armed forces in decades.

5. Nagrota Attack

On 29 November, armed militants dressed in police uniforms attacked Army's artillery unit in J&K's Nagrota. The terrorists stormed into two buildings that housed families of army jawans.

However, all the families were evicted before the hostage situation developed. The army lost seven of its personnel, including two jawans in the attack. The three attackers were also killed in the encounter.
