IPL 2017: 5 major controversies that rocked the Indian Premier League over the years
Much-fancied Indian Premier League is celebrated like a festival through out the country. The event is once again ready to set the stage on fire with its tenth edition.
The teams are gearing up to showcase their best show and stake a claim to the title.
The tournament's journey had its share of ups and downs in the history. In all its glory, the event has witnessed some of the best games and memorable moments but the tournament was also marred by grave controversies from time to time.
Here are some of the most talked about controversies of IPL so far:
1. Spot-Fixing Scandal (2013)
The cash-rich league got mud on its face when the shocking spot-fixing scandal broke out in 2013.
Delhi police had arrested three players from the Rajasthan Royals - S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan- over allegations that they met the bookies. Several bookies were also nabbed by the police.
The Supreme Court had formed Justice Mukul Mudgal panel to investigate the whole matter.
2. 2 years ban on Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals
The IPL spot-fixing scandal got murkier with teams like CSK and RR carving their way to suspension. The Justice Mukul Mudgal panel submitted its report to the Justice Lodha Panel in 2014.
After receiving the report, the Lodha Panel suspended both Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals from the IPL for two years in 2015 following involvement of Gurunath Meiyappan and Raj Kundra, team owners of CSK and RR respectively.
3. The Slapgate
Harbhajan Singh of Mumbai Indians got embroiled into an ugly spat with Kings XI Punjab's pacer S Sreesanth after losing a match in the first edition of the league in 2008.
Sreesanth boasted about the victory in the words that Harbhajan found offensive. In retaliation, the spinner allegedly slapped the Punjab star.
The visibly crying Sreesanth became the butt of jokes after the slap-gate. Unconfirmed reports suggest that Harbhajan had later apologised to Sreesanth in the dressing room.
4. Sacking of Lalit Modi
Lalit Modi was the man behind the idea of Indian Premier League. He took the league to the unimaginable heights as the tournament became a mega-hit. While the league continue the enjoy the fame, things didn't go well with Lalit Modi.
After the conclusion of IPL's third edition, Modi was sacked after being accused of money laundering, financial impropriety, offering bribes, rigging bidding deals and betting.
5. Mumbai Cricket Association banned Shah Rukh Khan
Bollywood actor and Kolkata Knight Riders franchise owner, Shah Rukh Khan, allegedly got into a scuffle with the security guards after a match between KKR and Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium in 2012.
The MCA claimed that SRK was abusive and drunk when he got involved in the argument. The actor, on the other side, maintained that the guards were manhandling the kids that led to the scuffle.
Later, the MCA banned SRK from attending any match at the Wankhede Stadium for the duration of five years.
The ban was eventually lifted in 2015 and SRK was again allowed to enter Wankhede stadium.
