#CinemaTales: When Bhagwan Dada made stuntmen dance in Albela
After directing a string of action entertainers, Bhagwandada decided to venture into the space of dramatic films with his 1951 film, Albela.
While many in the industry criticised him for his decision to move out of his comfort zone, Geeta Bali threw her weight behind him. She signed on for the film opposite him, despite facing severe backlash from the industry and her friends.
Albela went on to become one of the costliest Bollywood films of its time. While many will recognise the song, Shola Jo Bhadke, from Albela, few know about the drama that ensued while making the song.
After C Ramchandra composed Shola Jo Bhadke, Bhagwan Dada decided to mount a lavish set for the song. Once Raj Kapoor found out that Bhagwan Dada was shooting for one of the biggest songs in Bollywood, he decided to book all the Bollywood background dancers for one of his film shoots. The move came as a shock to Bhagwan Dada as this would mean the shooting for Shola Jo Bhadke be delayed by a few days.
However, since the director didn't want to entail heavy losses, he decided to shoot for the song with stuntmen. Not only did Bhagwan Dada convince the stuntmen to dance in the song alongside him and Geeta Bali but also ensured that they din't look out of place.
Shola Jo Bhadke went on to become one of the first songs in Bollywood that did not make use of trained dancers.
