SHOCKING: When Aditya Chopra threw away his collections of Western music CDs in his late teens

en Bollywood News SHOCKING: When Aditya Chopra threw away his collections of Western music CDs in his late teens

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is one of the greatest films of Indian Cinema in all respects. The film was loved for its performances, storyline, the underlying message and most importantly, also for its music. It’s been 22 years and yet, all its songs are super hits and even today are loved so much. Credit obviously goes to music composer duo Jatin-Lalit but one can’t take away from the fact that even Aditya Chopra had a great ear for music, which also contributed to Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge music’s super success.

SHOCKING: When Aditya Chopra threw away his collections of Western music CDs in his late teens

This however wouldn’t have been possible if its director Aditya Chopra had not decided to ditch the herd mentality. In the book ‘Aditya Chopra Relives…Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’, written by Nasreen Munni Kabir, Aditya Chopra explains that he grew up in a upper class world and hence was listening more to western music those days like Bruce Springsteen, George Michael etc.

The change occurred when Aditya Chopra in his late teens was watching a Hindi film. He said, “I thought the film looked glossy but was unmoved by the story or the characters. I could tell the film was a reworking of some American movie and recognized that some of the tunes were copied from western tunes.”

What Aditya Chopra realized, was that even he might repeat the same mistake. He stated, “I realized my influenced had become so westernized that if I were to direct a Hindi film someday, I was to going to repeat the same mistake and make a film that was detached from Indian values and emotional experience.”

Aditya Chopra then did the unthinkable! He threw out a drawer full of pop and rock music CDs that he had “proudly amassed”. Since then, he has never listened to western music. He admitted that he was watching a lot of Hindi films but was not listening to Hindi film music as it was considered ‘uncool’. He even couldn’t express about his love for Hindi music with his friends as it was not the ‘in’ thing.

In no time, Aditya Chopra became a Hindi film music fanatic. He revealed, “I’d rush out and buy every cassette in the market. I never failed to hear the hit parade show, Geetmala, anchored by Ameen Sayani when he restarted his great radio programme in 1989 on Vividh Bharati on Monday nights. Ameen Sayani would play the popular songs of the time. I would list the top songs every week in a diary that I kept in those days. I even had the nerve to think that I could spot a hit tune before it became a hit.”

Talking about his favourite song, Aditya Chopra admitted that it’s the soulful ‘Tera Mera Pyaar Amar’ from Dev Anand-Sadhana 1962 film Asli Naqli. It was sung by Lata Mangeshkar and composed by Shankar-Jaikishan. He said, “It was an easy song to sing, so I used to sing it a lot. I fell in love with the delicacy of the tune and the feeling of warmth the words gave me. I also liked the fact that the song was personal to me because I had chosen it. It wasn’t a film from a film that I’d seen, and still haven’t seen it…”

The simplicity of the tunes and touching lyrics along with the ‘mitti ki khushboo’ element were also the reasons why Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge songs worked and continue to rule the hearts of people.
