Here’s how Ileana D’Cruz and Amy Jackson supported Taapsee Pannu over her comments on South films’ obsession with midriff

Over the past few months, many actresses have decided to speak out on topics dealing with gender discrimination and inequality in the Indian entertainment industry. Amidst the debatable subject of disparity, yet another topic of discussion was raised by Taapsee Pannu who spoke about South films’ obsession with midriff.

It is a renowned fact that Taapsee Pannu, who is now known for her roles in Pink and Naam Shabana gained fame as a South actress. During her recent appearance at a comedy show, a comment made by Taapsee about her debut film’s director K Raghavendra Rao throwing a coconut on her midriff for a song sparked a major controversy with the filmmakers’ fans slamming her on social media. While she did a live show along with the comedy group East India Company, the actress said, “My first day they started with a song and it was an obsession over my midriff. The director who launched me is known to have a midas touch in terms of launching actresses and it was his 105^th movie with me. He is known to show sensuality of a woman by showing off the midriff and throwing flowers, fruits at it. Since I knew it was going to happen to me, I started watching videos of all the actresses [he has worked with] like Sridevi but when my turn came, they threw a coconut at me.” While she continued to receive flak on social media for insulting a veteran filmmaker, two other actresses have come out in support of her.

Ileana D’Cruz who too started her career with YVS Chowdary’s film cited a similar example where a porcelain shell was dropped on her midriff during one of the scenes in the film. She reinstated that Chowdary considers Rao as his guru which inspired him to take up a scene like this. All of 18, Ileana elaborated on it saying how several shots were taken of it including close-ups and her abs hurt due to the same. Although she is not keen on knowing what goes into filmmaking, she did agree to the fact that throwing fruits and flowers on midriff is quite horrible.

On the other hand, Amy Jackson has never come across something like that and expressed how horrifying all of this is. While she firmly clarified that she would never agree to get such things thrown on her midriff, she also maintained that not every actress has been in a similar situation. She also thanked her directors and co-stars who never claimed to want any such kind of scenes for their films. But she definitely hates to be the one to have to deal with something like that and stated that if someone would throw a coconut at her, she will throw it back at them.
